Entry, exit, and imperfect competition in the long run

چکیده
An infinite-horizon, stochastic model of entry and exit with sunk costs and imperfect competition is constructed. A subgame perfect Nash equilibrium for the general dynamic stochastic game is shown to exist as a limit of finite-horizon equilibria. This equilibrium has a relatively simple structure characterized by two numbers per finite history. Under very general conditions, it tends to exhibit excessive entry and insufficient exit relative to a social optimum. Journal of Economic Literature Classification Numbers: C73, D43, L13

Fixed Costs, Imperfect Competition and Bias in Technology Measurement: Japan and the United States
The phenomenal success of East Asian economies has centered attention on the source of their economic growth. Recent studies based on neoclassical theory have produced controversial results: the most important source of economic growth of the East Asian countries (except Japan) is capital accumulation, and the estimated rate of technological progress is very small and, in some cases, substantia...
متن کاملEnvironmental Taxation and Structural Change in an Open Economy A CGE Analysis with Imperfect Competition and Free Entry
The economic effects of environmental taxes depend on the market structure. Under imperfect competition with free entry and exit, environmental taxes have an impact on economies of scale by changing the number and size of firms. Whether economies of scale rise or fall in a particular industry depends on induced changes in the price elasticity of demand. Because export demand is more price elast...
متن کاملLong run relationship between entry and exit: time series evidence from Turkish manufacturing industry
This paper investigates the long run relationship between entry and exit using aggregate annual data from the Turkish manufacturing industry for the period 1968-2001. The time series properties of the data imply that simple OLS regressions may yield spurious results. We employ both bivariate and multivariate models to test for Granger causality. Utilizing relatively new time series techniques, ...
متن کاملMerger Policy , Entry , and Entrepreneurship
We assess the impact of merger policy on entry and entrepreneurship. Facing uncertainty about its prospects and foreseeing that it may wish to quit should profitability prove poor, a rational entrant considers possible exit routes. Horizontal merger reduces competition subsequently, lowering welfare in the short run, but also provides a valuable exit route. By facilitating exit and thus raising...
متن کاملRegulation , Imperfect Competition , and the U . S . Abortion Market
The market for abortion in the U.S. has become increasingly concentrated in recent years and many states have tightened abortion regulations aimed at providers. Using unique data on abortion providers I estimate a dynamic model of entry, exit and service provision which captures the effect of regulation on provider behavior. High fixed costs explain the growth of large clinics and estimates sho...
